Not too many years ago, if you wanted to compose or arrange music, you would get out the staff paper and pencil. Now, with the advent of computers, it more likely means getting into your favorite notation software program.
The two industry leaders in notation software are Sibelius® and Finale®. Barbershop Academy has chosen to use and teach Finale® software for a number of reasons. The primary one is the presence of free and low-cost versions.
When Barbershop Academy began, and for several years previously, Finale NotePad® was a free, though limited, version of notation software. Then in the late 2008 MakeMusic, Inc., the producer of Finale® software, changed its pricing strategy. NotePad® 2009 (released in October 2008) would cost $9.95 as a download. At the same time MakeMusic® introduced Finale Reader™, a new product that would display, print, and play the Finale files, but would not allow any editing at all.
Barbershop Academy desires to hold down costs as much as possible for students. In many courses the capabilities of Finale Reader™ are more than adequate. In other courses that require student feedback, editing capability is needed. Many students may already possess an earlier free version of Notepad® and want help in using it.
Because of the stated reasons, the course that had been focused on Finale NotePad® has been updated to cover both NotePad® and Reader™. The first two lessons will deal specifically with Finale Reader™ while the remaining four will be devoted to NotePad®. The first lesson will guide you through the download process, so it's not necessary to have it ready-to-go by the first email.
